Why I'm Not A Feminist
It's also never sat right with me that women can't even have a single word for themselves. Even female anatomical terms have been co-opted for use as derogatory terms. Historically, so much of the language around women is basically, "like the male version but a little off". -ess, -ette, the occasional -ine or -trix. Especially in this instance I think it's important men to de-emphasize themselves and their role. Feminist supporter. Feminist ally. Feminister. Femimister? A secondary supportive role defined using secondary supportive language.
I cannot and should not speak for women, especially on issues I cannot possibly have direct personal experience on. While I have many thoughts and opinions on women's issues, because my brain doesn't ever ever stop it has thoughts and opinions on everything, but to in any way claim my thoughts or opinions on those issues should have any kind of equal standing as people with personal experience is wrong. So for me to say I'm a feminist, that's too close to saying I can speak for feminists. Or that I can in some way represent women on women's issues, which I can't.
And while I've kind of kept this in binary terms, it should be clear that the feminism I support is solely the feminism that embraces and supports transgender and non-binary people. While it's not my place to define feminism I also won't support garbage either. A movement to uplift should not simultaneously be pushing down on anyone.
