But I Doubt Disney Has The Guts Or Vision To...
One of the unquestionable highlights of the Star Wars Universe is... well, the universe. Or the galaxy at any rate. It just may be the best example of world building in fiction, or at least on par with the best. Which is both wonderful, and utterly frustrating. Because so much of it is either not fully fleshed out or it's left to supplemental materials to explore. So my hope is, with the Skywalker saga dragged limping across the screen to it's death, Disney explores the galaxy. Focus on continuing the world building prior to doing anything else near the scale of the trilogy of trilogies.
So here are some ideas, ways to fill out the richness of the universe without making the Star Wars brand stale(r).
Film noir style movie on Coruscant, not long after the Empire takes over. A hard nosed former Republic police officer joins with the Empire security forces, glad that someone is finally bringing law and order to the streets of Coruscant. His abusive tactics that got him in trouble with Republic authorities make him a favorite of his new bosses. (I'm using male pronouns, doesn't have to be a male lead).
The world of Coruscant can be explored from the ground. How the Empire's rule affects everyday life of normal citizens can be explored. And since this officer will come across the resistance, the formation of the resistance on Coruscant can be explored.
The overall arch would be the officer embracing the Empire for the order he thinks it represents, and the slow disillusionment as he discovers the monster it truly is. And I would say throw in him trying to track down and stop a serial killer. And for fun I'd make the killer a force user who can't control their abilities. That might be too much for Disney, though. But the right director could pull off gritty without going overboard.
A Wookie documentary. Wookumentary? Back when the Republic made first contact with Kashyyyk. They send in a small diplomatic team to learn about and attempt to make peace with the Wookies. The film is shot from the point of view of a camera droid. Really dive in and explore Wookie culture, as it was prior to the influence of interstellar contact. More than any other of my ideas, this is what I want to see the most. Give Wookies the love they deserve.
A movie set in the Cantina on Mos Eisley, written and directed by Kevin Smith.
Space Navy Seals. 100% in space on board ships. A small group of rebel soldiers using skill and tactics to cripple the overwhelmingly more powerful Empire fleet. Neither side is shown as incompetent. Storm troopers can hit their targets. So much awesome action with an actual feeling of danger and high stakes. Give a real sense of the unbelievable power of the Empire's fleet, and show how paranoid the Emperor was wanting a Death Star when he already had the most powerful military ever ten times over.
A Wookie romcom on Kashyyyk. No subtitles, it's a romcom, we get it.
In summary, what I'm saying is, you can make any kind of movie and use the Star Wars Universe as the backdrop. As long as it's not just to cash in the name. Great characters, great plot, and then you have the added benefit of deeper world building. Change it up and enrich it at the same time. Then, down the road, when another large scale movie(s) happen, the backdrop already be lush and filled out. Don't try to explain everything, don't pull in established characters for bs cameos, don't beat the Jedi horse to death. Just write really good relatable stand alone films, that could stand alone in any galaxy, let them enhance the Star Wars Universe while the Star Wars Universe provides an amazing backdrop for them.
