The Nazis: Seriously Not F'n Socialists

As someone who loves history, and facts, it has always bothered me when people say that the Nazis were socialists. It's such a poor view of history, and often intentionally misstated in order to slander any socialist or socialist ideas. But the reality is, nope. Nazis were not socialist. Not even close.

After WWI Hitler joined German military intelligence. He was assigned to monitor, and influence if possible, the German Worker's Party. The military was keeping an eye on all the political groups in Germany, especially the new ones sprouting up after the war. Kind of like COINTELPRO, which is so wild because the FBI recruited Nazis after the war to help against communists, and before long the FBI is running a program eerily similar to the one that Hitler was a part of...

At the time there were socialists in the German Workers Party. It was really a mixed bag though, so much so that there was opposition to renaming the party the National Socialist German Workers Party, which is of course where the word Nazi came from. Fun fact, the Nazis never called themselves Nazis as the word was previously used to mock backwards and uncivilized peasants, so when Nazi's opponents shortened the National Socialists to Nazi, it was a slur that Nazis hated. And why they should always be referred to as Nazis. Anyways, Hitler was one of the people who was opposed to adding socialist to the name. Because he was not one of the socialists, which is very very important because:

After he became Chancellor the Nazi party was the Hitler party. To make sure of that fact, Hitler murdered all the socialist leadership that wasn't able to flee the country. He killed some non-socialists too, anyone he thought was a threat or not 10000% loyal to him, but the Night of The Long Knives ended any socialist influence within the party. By the time the Nazis invaded Poland, there was no socialism in the National Socialist party.

So what was the Nazi government? A mix of corporatism and militarism with an extreme fascist dictator at the helm. The entire economy was converted into a war economy. The government had absolute control of the means of production and the people had no control over the government. It was not remotely in any sense of the word, socialism. They used slaves, unpaid forced labor, which is the antithesis of socialism.

Hitler believed all labor and all resources and everything that was produced in Germany was his to do with as he wished, so not a socialist. The people of Germany had zero control over their labor, and as individuals and communities gained little by it as it was all the state's, so not living in a socialist society. Trying to frame what the Nazis did as socialism is just ignorance of both socialism and the Nazis. And again, generally intentionally obscured, as modern fascists want people to associate their enemies with Nazism so people don't see what fascists they are. So anyone who says Nazis were socialists is either ignorant, or fascist, or most likely, both.
